Farming

Pono Farm is a regenerative farming project created at Down Barton Farm in St. Nicholas-at-Wade in Thanet.

We have recently turned our farm over to a rewilding project with a specific focus on providing habitat for turtle doves, lapwings, yellow hammers and sky larks.

Our main reason for doing this is to restore the soil and give a home to wildlife. Our project will last 5 years to begin with after which time we intend to put the upland fields back into some kind of food production with a focus on providing local food to local people and keep the marsh as a wilder place for the birds.

For now we are focusing on setting up a market garden. In 2025, we would like to see our local community have access to fresh vegetables that haven’t lost their flavour from lengthy cold storage and travel.
